The influence of artificial intelligence on user experience design is becoming clearer as it enters our daily lives. From chatbots that help people find what they are looking for to virtual assistants that offer individual suggestions, AI has the power to change how we engage with technology.
But how, precisely, will this affect UX designers?
From paper to computers
While studying communication design in the late 1990s, my school already had some of the latest computers available, but their use was still limited. I quickly felt there was a choice to make: accept the old-school design on paper proposed by purist teachers, or embrace the dark side of the menacing beast called technology.
A few years later, I realised there was no real choice between paper and computers. The choice was between staying in the past and moving forward.
AI as an amplifier
AI does not replace designers. It can enhance their work with data and insights. Machine-learning algorithms and predictive analytics can help UX designers tailor experiences to each user, reducing guesswork and strengthening design decisions.
AI is also becoming capable of taking on everyday tasks in the UX space, such as testing new features and supporting usability and accessibility studies. That can free designers to spend more time on creative and strategic work.
More natural conversations
AI technologies enable UX designers to create more engaging conversations between people and machines, making information simpler and more intuitive to access. As natural-language processing advances, richer conversations inside interfaces can lead to more useful and immersive experiences.
AI will play an important role in shaping the future of UX design, making parts of the job more efficient while opening new creative possibilities. Designers need to keep learning so they can use those possibilities with intention.
